UPDATE FRIDAY 2pm
Although Winter may not be considered a traditional braai time, it does offer us locals an opportunity to enjoy our beautiful surroundings without the hoards of tourists that summer brings.

UPDATE FRIDAY 2pm
Well if this forecast holds, and it should, it looks to be a stunner of a day. |
Although Winter may not be considered a traditional braai time, it does offer us locals an opportunity to enjoy our beautiful surroundings without the hoards of tourists that summer brings.
And, aware that we don't really do much for the whole family we have decided that while Derek leads the paddlers off to see whales and visit the caves around Cape Point, Maragret will accompany walkers on a moderate 2 hour hike. It's a circular route that takes us along the shore line, above the caves and then through the fynbos over the ridge, back to Buffels, where we can get the fire going on one of the many braai places.
So bring your favorite braai stuff, coal and wood and let's try something a little different.
For those that want to stay on the beach the waves at Buffels are good for body boarding and there is a small sea pool there for those that want to practice their rolling, or stroke, or just chill out.
Please be aware that baboons are always around where there is food so bring a deterrent and remain alert. They also open car doors and like window washers.
Of course if the weather is bad we will postpone until the next weekend. Check this blog regularly closer to the 4th for updates.

Supermoon June 2013: Everything You Need To Know About Perigee Moon This Weekend
One of the biggest celestial events of the year is almost upon us!
Set to peak on Sunday, June 23, the 2013 supermoon is noteworthy not only for the remarkable sight it will present to skywatchers but also because it will be the largest supermoon this year.
Also known as a perigee full moon, the event occurs when a full moon lines up with the Earth and the sun at a specific point in its orbit, called the lunar perigee. That's the point at which the moon is nearest to Earth as it traces its elliptical path around our planet.
Since it's closer to us, the moon appears up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than usual. Coined by astrologer Richard Nolle, the term "supermoon" essentially means a bigger and brighter full moon.
But what makes Sunday's supermoon so special?
While skywatchers will be able to spot another supermoon in July, the moon will not be this close again until August 2014.

Hout Bay pictures
Simply excellent paddle yesterday. Beautiful conditions. We paddled from the harbour out to Seal Island then across to Chapmans Peak, then followed the cliffs back towards Hout Bay returning to the harbour for a few pints and lunch. For those who asked how far it was, Google Earth measured around 15kms

Another Full Moon Paddle - or not
SAT 2pm
It's very cloudy and getting windy. Better luck next month. :(
A lunar month has almost gone by and it's time for another full moon paddle but the weather does not seem to want us to have another wonderful evening this time. Check this blog or twitter before you leave home to find out if we are on.

Buffels to Simon's Town 17th March
UPDATE Saturday Midday
Forecast is still pretty good so this trip is ON unless it's changes dramatically - which is unlikely.
UPDATE Friday 16.00
Forecast has moderated slightly and it stays westerly until later in the morning so it's looking much better.
UPDATE Friday 12.30
Forecast is for moderate NW wind so it's not an ideal direction. Let's see what tomorrow's forecast looks like.
This Sunday we are doing a Buffells Bay to Simon's Town for those fit and keen enough. (The usual Simon's Town 9.30am paddle still takes place for those who can't make this one)
Meet at the shop at 8.30am to car pool down to the reserve. As usual we will update here on the blog with new forecasts as they change. The go ahead will be given here and also on this Twitter account which is easier to update and more reliable. You don't need to join Twitter or follow if you don't want to.
